In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

The Blc. Hippodamia is a beloved orchid hybrid that has been circulating for decades among Cattleya-type enthusiasts. This hybrid is known for its full flowers, subtle color gradient and striking flower lip, giving it a graceful and classic look. An asset to any collection, especially for those who love fragrant orchids with a traditional charm.

Origin

The name Blc. refers to the earlier genus Brassocattleya, a cross between Brassavola and Cattleya. Today, many of these hybrids formally fall under Rhyncholaeliocattleya, but the abbreviation Blc. is still widely used in the hobby. The exact parent combination of Hippodamia goes back to crosses in the second half of the 20th century, when people were looking for fragrant, well-flowering Cattleya types with round flowers.

Characteristics

Blc. Hippodamia produces hefty, often slightly wavy flowers about 10 to 13 inches in diameter. The flower color is usually a soft peachy pink or creamy yellow, with a prominent lip, often white to darker pink. The flowers emit a pleasant fragrance that is especially noticeable during the day.
The plant itself remains relatively compact, with sturdy pseudobulbs and leathery leaves. This also makes this hybrid suitable for a smaller windowsill or greenhouse space.

Care

Light

This plant desires lots of bright, indirect light. A spot behind an east or west window is ideal. In winter, direct sunlight won't hurt either. Too little light hinders flowering.

Temperature

Blc. Hippodamia feels best at warm to moderate temperatures between 18 and 26 °C. Nighttime drops down to 15 °C are well tolerated.

Substrate

Use an aerated orchid substrate based on medium coarse bark. A small proportion of coarser substrate can help improve air circulation around the roots.

Humidity

Aim for humidity between 55 and 75%. For dry air, a humidifier or regular misting of the environment can help.

Watering

Allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Preferably give demineralized water at room temperature. In winter, watering may be reduced. Do not use tap water with this species. Clean rainwater then offers a better alternative, but always watch out for mineral buildup in the roots.

Nutrition

During the growing season (spring and summer), feed weekly with a balanced orchid fertilizer in half dose. In winter, once a month is sufficient.

Flowering

Flowering usually occurs in late spring or fall, depending on growing conditions. After flowering, the pseudobulb may wilt, but this is normal. Each mature pseudobulb can bear one flowering stem.
