The Dendrobium is increasingly being offered in small flowers and plant stores. Yet there are many more different types of this plant that are definitely worth the purchase! A unique Dendrobium can be a nice gift for an orchid collector, but also for someone who would like an easy houseplant or orchid to start with. In terms of care, this is not one of the most difficult plants. But the Dendrobium does have different species with very beautiful full flower branches with several beautiful flowers.

Origin and characteristics

Dendrobiums generally come from Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand and are often epiphytic orchids with a very diverse size and appearance between species. They often have elongated pseudobules and are sometimes deciduous during a certain period of the year. Some species can get flower branches of a meter long!

Habitat and Diversity

After Bulbophyllum, the Dendrobium with around 1800 species is the largest orchid genus in the world. In particular, there are many species in tropical low land rain forests and cooler forests in the Himalaya mountains. That is why these orchid species also look so incredibly diverse.

Special types of Dendrobiums

One of the most special dendrobiums that we have recurring in our range is the Alien Orchid. This is a very special orchid with wavy, curly petals and a separate drawing on the petals. The Latin name of this plant is Dendrobium Spectabile.

The Dendrobium also has a large number of fun miniature orchids, which can be extremely suitable for, for example, as a decoration in a terrarium. For example, the Dendrobium microbulbon is only a few centimeters in size and can already bloom with small, cute pink flowers.

Other popular dendrobium species include the Dendrobium Densiflorum, Dendrobium Bellatulum, Dendrobium CuthBersonii "Yellow" and the Dendrobium Hekouense.

Medications and food

The Dendrobium Nobile is a species that is also known as a medicinal plant in China. In addition, certain parts of the Dendrobium Canaliculatum by the indigenous people of Australia used to be used as a nutrient.

Culture and symbolism

The dendobium is widely used as an emblem for regions. For example, the Dendrobium Formosum is used for the province of Ranong in Thailand, the Dendrobium Kimilsungia for North Korea, the Dendrobium Nobile for Sikkim in India, the Dendrobium Bigibbum for Maluku in Indonesia and Queensland in Australia and the Miyhagora, MiYLIFORE, ).

In Australia, the Cooktown Orchid is depicted on stamps and in Singapore there are dendrobiums printed on notes in the 1970s. The orchids that were depicted on this were the Dendrobium Marjorie Ho, Dendrobium Shangri-La and the Dendrobium Kimiyo Kondo.
