Miniature orchids are mainly used in small spaces, as fillers or in a terrarium. These special orchids do not grow large and, moreover, there are often many fragrant little orchids among them, such as the Shoe Orchid fragrans.
Did you know that there are not only medium-sized orchids, but also miniature orchids? These orchids are often suitable to keep in a terrarium or to tie up. Several species have very distinct flowers, some of which are fragrant. Often they are capable of flowering even in very small sizes.
The best known small orchid genera include the Shoe Orchid, Dracula, Aerangis, Lepanthes, Masdevallia, Pleurothallis, Sophronitis and Pleione. These orchids are all small in size, yet each is very special.
Many miniature orchids are rare and have distinct looks. For example, the Masdevallia has several unique flower shapes and colors, sometimes resembling a bird of paradise or an alien. In addition, the flowers appear
of the Dracula resemble the face of a monkey and the Dracula vampira even has
one of nature's blackest flowers!
