The name of the Cymbidium comes from the Greek word "kumbos" (hollow), referring to the shape of the base of the lip. Cymbidium is a genus with about 50 species spread through tropical and subtropical Asia (As in northern India, in China, Japan, Malaysia, in the Philippines and Borneo.) and in northern Australia. They are found in the Himalayas, at higher altitudes in China, as well as in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. Cymbidium have a sympodial growth habit and grow about 60 centimeters tall. The raceme grows from the most recent pseudobulb and can reach 90 centimeters in length. Each flower is between 5 and 10 centimeters in diameter. They bloom in winter and each cluster can have as many as 15 or more flowers. The flowers of this genus have many different colors, including white, green, yellow-green, cream-colored, yellow, brown, pink, red, orange and even black, but no blue. They bloom for about 10 weeks and have a waxy texture with rounded petals and sepals. There is also great diversity in the markings on the flowers.
