In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

With its deep, velvety red flowers and graceful flower clusters, the Cymbidium Strathdon 'Chailey Red' is a true eye-catcher. Known for its rich color and long flowering, this hybrid is loved by enthusiasts who love powerful, classic beauty with a modern appeal.

Origin

The Cymbidium Strathdon is a hybrid created from carefully selected crosses within the genus Cymbidium. The cultivar 'Chailey Red' is distinguished by its intense shades of red, a color that is rare within this genus. The plant is named after Chailey, a village in the English county of East Sussex. A subtle nod to the origins of this particular hybrid.

Characteristics

Flowers

Large, waxy flowers in a deep red color with a slightly contrasting lip.

Flowering time

From September through November, with proper care and temperature.

Leaf

Narrow, oblong and grass-like leaves that grow up elegantly.

Size

A mature plant can produce several flower branches, each with up to 12 flowers.

Care

Light

This Cymbidium needs plenty of light, but avoid direct sunlight in summer. A spot with morning sun or filtered light is ideal.

Temperature

For optimal daytime growth during the growing period: 18-25 °C. In summer, it is important that the plant gets cool nights, around 10-13 °C. This temperature drop stimulates the production of flower branches.
During flowering, the temperature may remain a bit lower: preferably between 12-18 °C. Higher temperatures can shorten flowering.

Substrate

Use an airy orchid bark substrate that drains well.

Humidity

Average humidity is sufficient, provided there is good ventilation.

Nutrition

During the active growing period (March to October) fertilize weekly with diluted orchid fertilizer. Taper off in autumn and stop feeding in winter.

Watering

Keep the substrate slightly moist during the growing season, without keeping it wet. Allow the top layer to dry up between waterings. Preferably use demineralized water or rainwater.

Flowering

The Cymbidium Strathdon 'Chailey Red' flowers preferably in the cool months, between October and March. For flower branch formation, a difference of 8-12 °C between day and night temperatures is recommended. A summer period with cool nights (around 10 °C) is often decisive for initiating flowering.
Allow spent flower branches to die off completely before removing them. Flowering usually continues for several weeks and can be impressively rich on mature plants.
