In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

A compact, intensely flowering orchid with a distinctly tropical character. Ascocentrum ampullaceum is known for its dense clusters of bright orange, pink or purple flowers - depending on origin and clone. This species is rare in the trade, but loved by connoisseurs for its small size, powerful appearance and adaptability to greenhouse, windowsill or even hanging system.

Origin

Ascocentrum ampullaceum is native to the tropical mountain forests of India, Nepal, Bhutan and Southeast Asia, where it grows as an epiphyte on tree branches in warm, humid environments. Although the genus Ascocentrum is now formally merged with Vanda, this species is still often offered under the old name in the fancier world because of the obvious morphological differences.

Characteristics

The plant remains relatively small, with firm, upright leaves in a double fan shape. The roots are airy and gray-green, typical of epiphytic orchids. During flowering, a compact cluster develops with numerous small, round flowers that are remarkably long-lasting. The inflorescence usually appears at the tip of the plant and, in mature specimens, forms an exuberant feast of colors. Colors vary by clone from deep purple-pink to bright orange.

Care

Light

Lots of bright light to light morning sun. Tolerates more sun than the average orchid if properly acclimated. In dark months, apply supplemental light if necessary.

Temperature

Ideally between 20-28 °C during the day, with nights around 16-18 °C. Short cooldowns are tolerated, but avoid prolonged below 14 °C.

Substrate

Preferably grown without substrate in a hanging basket or on cork, possibly with a little sphagnum around the roots. Also possible in very coarse bark, provided air circulation is high.

Humidity

Between 60% and 85%. Dry air slows growth and negatively affects flowering. Suitable for greenhouse or well-ventilated terrarium.

Watering

Spray daily in warm temperatures. In cooler periods reduce to 3-4 times per week. Preferably use demineralized water to avoid calcium deposits on roots.

Nutrition

During active growth, feed weekly with a diluted orchid fertilizer (1/4 strength). During dormant period, feed less frequently.

Flowering

Blooms once or twice a year, often in spring or summer, depending on climate and light. Flowers are small but very numerous, and last a long time. A mature plant can form several flower stems per season.
