Origin

This botanical miniature orchid is a relatively new species, first described in Thailand around 2014. It grows epiphytically in the limestone hills in western Thailand at 800-900 meters altitude, in Umphang District.

The orchid is named after Professor Dr. Obchant Thaithong of Chulalongkorn University. This botanist has long been instrumental in the study of Thai orchids.

Features

This compact orchid can also be described as a miniature orchid. This rare species has small red flowers and likes to grow on a block. The dark red flowers grow in a calyx-like shape and often have a yellow and orange lip. It is a spring bloomer, usually blooming around April/May.

A funny description of the way the red flower petals look when fully open is also like the mouth of a baby bird in a nest.

Care

Because this species has been offered among breeders for a relatively short time, there are not yet many clear guidelines for care. Many breeders are still perfecting the care.

Rest period

Nevertheless, the advice is to refrain from feeding this species between October and March and drastically reduce watering around December. In winter, spraying is only necessary when the humps are in danger of wrinkling. This usually amounts to once a week. In winter, the species will lose its leaves. These will return in the spring.

Location and pot

This orchid prefers to grow on a block or cork. This makes it a good option for vivariums, terrariums, paludariums and greenhouses.

Light and water

This species likes average indirect sunlight. Do not put this plant in a spot that is too bright, as this species naturally likes a bit more shade. With good quality water (such as rainwater), this species can grow extremely well during the growing season. A light amount of orchid nutrition can contribute to an exuberant bloom.

Temperature and humidity.

This Porpax orchid likes moderate to warm temperatures and high humidity with good air movement (no drafts).
