Angraecum magdalenae

Angraecum magdalenae is one of the most beloved species within the genus Angraecum - and with good reason. This compact, robust plant from Madagascar is known for its pure white, star-shaped flowers with a long, elegant spur and an enchantingly sweet fragrance that spreads especially at night. A species that brings the atmosphere of a tropical mountain forest into the home, perfect for the advanced collector.

Origin

This species is endemic to the highlands of central and southern Madagascar, where it grows as a lithophyte (on rocks) or terrestrially in cooler mountain climates between 1,000 and 2,000 meters altitude. The conditions there are unique: plenty of light, cool nights, moderate rainfall and a distinctly dry winter. This species is therefore adapted to a distinct resting season - essential for flowering.

Characteristics

Angraecum magdalenae grows as a compact, upright plant with thick, leathery leaves and sturdy roots. The plant remains relatively low, but grows wider as it ages.
The flowers usually appear solitary or in pairs from the leaf axils and are white, fleshy, star-shaped and slightly upright. The spore can grow up to 20 cm long and indicates pollination by moths. The fragrance is strong, sweet and reminiscent of jasmine or vanilla, especially in the evening hours. In good condition, the plant can bloom annually in winter or early spring.

Care

Light

Bright, indirect light or morning sun. This species likes lots of light, but not harsh afternoon sun. In a greenhouse, on an east-facing window or under supplemental light, it feels at home.

Temperature

18-24°C during the day, ideally 10-14°C at night. Cool nights are essential to encourage flowering. Warmth during the day is fine, as long as the nights remain cool.

Substrate

Well-draining and aerated. Ideal is a mixture of coarse bark, lava rock, pumice and a small proportion of sphagnum or tree fern fiber. Also suitable for semi-open baskets or net pots.

Humidity

60-80%. Moderately high humidity is appreciated, with adequate ventilation to prevent root rot.

Nutrition

In the growing season (spring to late summer) feed every 2 weeks with diluted orchid fertilizer. In the dormant period (autumn/winter) do not feed.

Watering

Use only demineralized water or rainwater. Keep slightly moist during growth, but keep much drier in winter with occasional minimal spraying to keep the roots from drying out completely.

Flowering

Flowering usually occurs in late winter or early spring after a dry and cool dormant period. Flowers last 2-3 weeks and are strongly fragrant in the evening. Allow the flowering stem to dry out on its own.
