In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

The Catasetum tenebrosum is one of the most impressive species within the Catasetinae, especially loved for its dark-colored flowers that have a mystical, almost dramatic appearance. It is a species that combines strength and elegance, adding a unique accent to any collection with its deep colors.

Origin

Catasetum tenebrosum* is native to Ecuador and Peru, where it grows in tropical lowland forests. There it develops as an epiphyte on tree branches, exposed to lots of sunlight and high humidity during the growing season. The name tenebrosum literally means "dark" or "shady," and refers to the almost black-brown hues of the flowers.

Characteristics

The flowers of Catasetum tenebrosum are large, fleshy and deeply colored - ranging from maroon to almost black, often with a glossy texture. The lip is broad and rounded, giving the flower a powerful, solid impression. A flower cluster can bear several large flowers, making the blooms very imposing. The plant itself forms sturdy, tall pseudobulbs with long, narrow leaves that fall off in autumn to make way for dormancy.

Care

Light

This species likes a lot of light and tolerates even short periods of direct sunlight. A sunny position is ideal to stimulate flowering.

Temperature

Warm conditions are necessary, preferably 20-30 °C with slight nighttime cooling.

Substrate

An airy and well-draining mixture of coarse tree bark and charcoal is most suitable.

Humidity

A humidity of 50-70% is sufficient, provided good air circulation is present.

Nutrition

During the growth phase, fertilize generously weekly with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer. Once the pseudobulbs are mature, switch to a phosphorus-rich fertilizer to promote flowering.

Watering

Use only demineralized water. Water abundantly during the growing period. As soon as the leaves fall off in autumn, greatly reduce watering and only water minimally in the dormant period to prevent the pseudobulbs from drying out.

Flowering

The flowering of Catasetum tenebrosum is a true spectacle. With its dark brown to almost black flowers, this is one of the most dramatic-looking species within the genus. For collectors who love bold colors and a mystical look, this is an absolute must-have.
