In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

Even without flowers, Cattleya schilleriana gives something away: compact growth, marbled leaves and a plant that likes to have air around it. In the coerulea form, the blooms take on a cooler tone; from soft slate lilac to blue-violet. With a lip that draws deeper without overdoing it. Multiple flowers per stem combine to form a quiet, elegant presentation; recognizable schilleriana, but with that cool accent that collectors look for.

Origin

Naturally, C. schilleriana comes from eastern Brazil, where light, warmth and constant ventilation are the norm. The species grows there epiphytically and sometimes lithophytically; so quick drying and plenty of air around the roots are not a luxury, but a necessity. The coerulea color form is popular in culture for its subtle, cool coloring within the classic silhouette.

Features

The plant remains compact and bifolate, with those distinctive marbled leaves that add character even outside of flowering. When the stems open, multiple, distinctly fragrant flowers appear in a cool lilac-blue palette that can deepen slightly to blue-violet in good light; the lip shows richer markings with fine veining and a soft, warm glow in the throat. The whole looks balanced and calm, a coerulea presentation that is not intrusive but does attract attention every time.

Care

Light

Very bright position. Morning and late afternoon sun are welcome; preferably filter bright afternoon sun. Too little light quickly results in meager or no blooms.

Temperature

Moderate to warm: about 18-30 °C during the day, a few degrees cooler at night. A clear day/night difference supports bud establishment and compact growth.

Substrate

Airy and rapidly draining (coarse bark). A basket or mounting on cork works well provided the water regime is adjusted. Prefer slightly tighter potting for predictable drying out and active roots.

Humidity

Aim for 60-80% with continuous ventilation. Mist briefly in drier air, but allow leaves and growing tips to dry out smoothly; avoid stagnant, humid air.

Nutrition

During active growth, feed regularly but lightly (about once every 1-2 weeks diluted orchid nutrition). As shoots mature and in dark months, reduce frequency.

Watering

Use clean rainwater water. During the growing season, water regularly and let dry slightly in between; more sparingly in cooler or shorter days. On mounting or in a basket, the plant dries faster. Adjust frequency accordingly.

Bloom

In the run-up to the season, lots of light and a clear temperature difference helps. Leave the plant alone during the bud phase (do not repot or move). Protect open flowers from dry, hot air currents and harsh afternoon sun for maximum shelf life and color.
