In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

Chiloschista lunifera 'Red' is an extraordinary orchid that breaks all conventions. This rare epiphyte from Southeast Asia blooms without leaves and displays a striking color palette, with deep red to reddish-purple tinged flowers that stand out brightly against its tangle of roots. A true eye-catcher for the advanced collector.

Origin

Chiloschista lunifera grows naturally in the moist forests of India, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. It attaches to tree bark with its roots and lives as an epiphyte in a climate with marked seasonal changes. The cultivar 'Red' is known for its deep red flower color, a rarity within the genus.

Characteristics

This species is completely leafless outside the growing season. The roots take over the function of photosynthesis and form a silvery, branched network. In the right season, the plant develops several small flowers on short stalks, each with a waxy texture and intense red hues. The lip is usually contrastingly lighter in color, making the flower even more striking.

Care

Light

Bright, filtered light is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, especially in the afternoon hours, as the roots can burn quickly.

Temperature

Heat-loving. Between 22 and 30 °C during the day, not below 16 °C at night.

Substrate

Mounting on cork or bark is recommended. Loosely bound on an airy substrate, the roots function optimally.

Humidity

Maintain high humidity between 60% and 80%. Regular misting is necessary, especially during dry periods.

Watering

During the active growth period (spring and summer), mist daily or every other day with demineralized water. During the dormant period (autumn and winter), the plant is allowed to dry out slightly between waterings. Tap water should be avoided.

Nutrition

Use a highly diluted orchid fertilizer (1/4 strength) during the growing period, about once a week. Do not fertilize during the dormant period.

Flowering

Flowering usually occurs in late spring or summer, with a possible second bloom later in the year. Give the plant a dry dormant period of several weeks to encourage flowering.

Be surprised by the minimalist beauty and unique growth pattern of this exceptional species. Chiloschista lunifera 'Red' is a living work of art that shines without leaves.
