Chiloschista parishii "Green" "Big"

Chiloschista parishii 'Green' is an unusual leafless orchid that derives its ornamental value from a tangle of roots and a surprisingly exuberant flowering. Where other orchids impress mainly with their leaf structure, this species shows that pure simplicity can be just as impressive: a bundle of gray-green roots that turns into a cloud of delicate, soft-green flowers in bloom time.

Origin

C. parishii is native to Southeast Asia, including Myanmar, Thailand and Laos. It grows as an epiphyte on tree branches, often in fairly sunny positions where the roots catch plenty of light. Being leafless, the plant does its photosynthesis entirely through its roots, which simultaneously absorb water and nutrients.

Characteristics

The plant consists mainly of a network of gray-green, slightly shiny roots that adhere firmly to their substrate. In bloom, airy flower clusters appear with many small flowers in fresh shades of green, often with a subtle yellow or cream lip. The flowers contrast beautifully with the roots and give the plant an almost ethereal appearance.

Care

Light

Plenty of bright, filtered light is necessary. As a leafless orchid, C. parishii must absorb enough sunlight through its roots to grow healthily.

Temperature

Warm conditions are ideal: 22-30 °C, with a slight cooling at night.

Substrate

This species is best mounted on cork or wood. A thin layer of moss is allowed, but the roots must be largely free to breathe and photosynthesize properly.

Humidity

A high humidity of 70-85% is desired, combined with good air circulation.

Nutrition

Lightly fertilize regularly with highly diluted orchid fertilizer, sprayed directly over the roots.

Watering

Give only demineralized water. Daily misting is ideal in warm periods, so that the roots remain moist but still dry out in between.
