In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

The Dendrobium speciosum is known as one of Australia's most impressive orchids. This species is often called the "King Orchid" because of its grand growth habit and spectacular blooms. It is a plant that attracts immediate attention in the collection and can grow with you for years to become a stately specimen.

Origin

Dendrobium speciosum is native to eastern Australia, where it grows on rocky slopes and in open forests. There, the species exposes itself to bright sunlight, strong winds and fluctuations in temperature. Precisely this rugged origin explains why this orchid is considered one of the strongest and most durable species within the genus Dendrobium.

Characteristics

This orchid develops hefty, leathery leaves that grow from sturdy pseudobulbs. As the plant ages, it can grow into an impressive clump of dozens of shoots. Flowering is truly spectacular: in late summer to early spring, huge clusters of hundreds of small cream- to gold-colored flowers appear, often with a delightful honey-like fragrance. A mature specimen in full bloom can fill an entire room with color and fragrance.

Care

Light

Dendrobium speciosum requires a lot of light. A sunny spot, preferably direct sunlight for several hours a day, is ideal. In winter it may receive even more light.

Temperature

This species tolerates hot summer days as well as cool nights. Temperatures between 10 and 30 °C are suitable. A marked drop in temperature between day and night stimulates flowering.

Substrate

Use a coarse and aerated substrate, such as coarse bark. This provides adequate drainage and prevents the roots from staying wet for long periods of time.

Humidity

Average humidity of 50-70% is ideal, but the species can tolerate drier air temporarily.

Nutrition

During the growing period, regularly give orchid nutrition with a balanced composition. During the dormant period, after the growth of new shoots, feeding can be reduced.

Watering.

In the active growth phase (spring and summer), the plant may receive generous watering, always with demineralized water. Allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. In the cooler months, watering may be reduced.

Flowering

Flowering is stimulated by a cool rest period in fall and early winter, combined with plenty of light. Once the days lengthen and temperatures rise again, flower stalks form.
