In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

Habenaria medusa is one of the most fascinating orchids from the tropics of Southeast Asia. In its flowering season, it conjures an exotic spectacle with flowers reminiscent of a medusa head full of delicate white tentacles. This XXL tuber is currently dormant, but contains all the potential to grow into a vigorous plant that rewards you with spectacular blooms with the right care.

Origin

Habenaria medusa is native to the warm, moist forests of Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. This terrestrial orchid grows naturally in humus-rich, well-drained soils and attracts many orchid lovers with its unusual flowers.

Characteristics

This XXL tuber is an extra-large specimen, which means it usually sprouts more vigorously than smaller tubers and is more likely to flower in the coming season. When fully developed, the plant forms a rosette of green leaves from which develops a flower stem with several wondrous flowers: white, finely split, almost ghostly in shape - and therefore hugely popular with collectors of unusual species.

Care

Light

During the growth phase (spring and summer), this species likes bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, especially in the afternoon hours. During the dormant period (fall and winter), a cool, dry place with less light will suffice.

Temperature

Around 22-28 °C during the day during the growing season. At night, the temperature may drop slightly. At rest, a temperature between 10 and 18 °C is ideal.

Substrate

Use an aerated and moisture-retaining mixture that drains well. Consider a fine mix based on sphagnum, tree bark and leafy soil. Avoid perlite or calcareous materials.

Humidity

During active growth, the Habenaria medusa likes humidity between 60 and 80%. When dormant, a drier environment is actually desirable.

Nutrition

Feed weekly with a diluted orchid fertilizer (¼ strength) as soon as the first leaves become visible. Stop feeding as soon as the leaves begin to die.

Watering

Water only as soon as the first growth is visible. Keep moderately moist during the growth phase - never let the substrate dry out but do not let it be constantly wet either. Once the plant goes into dormancy (leaves wilt and die), keep completely dry.

Flowering

With proper care, this species blooms in late summer or early fall. The flowers are short-lived, but more than make up for that with their unusual shape and elegance.

Let the tuber quietly awaken at its own pace, and you will be rewarded with a bloom that truly captures the imagination. Are you interested in exclusive orchids with a story? Then the Habenaria medusa XXL should not be missing from your collection.
