Can a Cattleya to bloom in a living room?
Many Cattleya species can stand in a living room. They should get plenty of indirect, diffused sunlight during the day and they like to be in temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius during the day. At night, the temperature can go down to 16 degrees Celcius. The temperature change encourages the Cattleya to grow and flower.
Especially in winter and with air conditioning, make sure that the humidity in the house is maintained for the Cattleya. They find humidity between 50% and 80% pleasant. To increase the humidity locally, the Cattleya can be placed on a tray of wet hydro pellets or a humidifier can be used.
How do I water the Cattleya properly?
The Cattleya needs clean water. Tap water is unfortunately not sufficient here because it contains too much lime and/or chlorine. This can seriously harm the Cattleya. Do not give the Cattleya too much water. They do not like wet feet. Between each watering make sure that the substrate is dry almost to the bottom.
Ideally, the Cattleya should be watered in the morning. This prevents the growth of fungi and bacteria in the evening and night. In summer, the Cattleya likes to have weekly watering when watering also extra orchid food. But then flush the potting soil thoroughly once a month so that no minerals and salts accumulate in the medium.
