You've probably heard it before: "Houseplants purify the air." Maybe you read it on a plant label, or heard it from an avid plant lover. The idea that having a few green friends in your home dramatically improves air quality is stubbornly popular. But what's the real deal? What does science say about plants as air purifiers? And more importantly, should you be disappointed if that fairy tale turns out not to be true?
What does science say?
The story about air-purifying plants has its origins in a famous NASA study from 1989. In this study, NASA tested how well certain plants could remove pollutants such as benzene and formaldehyde from the air. And Yes, some plants were found to be able to absorb these substances - but under highly artificial conditions, in enclosed spaces with controlled air circulation.
In a normal home, that's a different story. More recent studies show that you would need hundreds of plants per square meter to get a measurable effect on air quality. In a 2019 overview study, researchers even concluded, "Although houseplants can purify air under controlled conditions, they are not effective as air filters in real living spaces."
In other words, it sounds nice, but in practice the effect is negligible.

Why plants are still valuable
You may now be thinking, "So why should I bring plants into my home?" But that's just the beauty of it: plants have value for so many other reasons - and they are just as important.
1. Plants provide peace and relaxation
Numerous studies show that looking at plants can reduce stress, calm your heart rate and even improve your concentration. Just taking care of plants can be a calming ritual in a busy life.
2. They improve humidity
Plants evaporate water through their leaves, contributing to more pleasant humidity in the home. Especially in winter, when heating dries out the air, this can make a difference to your skin, respiratory system and overall comfort.
3. They make your home more vibrant
Plants bring atmosphere, color and life to your home. They not only make a space more beautiful, but also make you feel more comfortable in your own environment.
4. They give a sense of belonging
Whether you lovingly care for one plant or maintain an entire jungle, plants give structure to your day and offer a sense of care and responsibility - something that benefits your mental well-being.

Love plants for the right reasons
It's fine to find plants beautiful, soothing or atmospheric. You don't need a scientific excuse to fill your home with greenery. Plants are valuable even without being miracle filters. So feel free to let go of the myth of the "air-purifying" houseplant - your plants are special enough just the way they are.
