In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

Begonia chlorosticta 'Red' is a coveted selection within the chlorosticta-complex. This cultivar combines deep dark green leaves with contrasting bright green dots as well as intensely red petioles, veins and undersides. An expressive appearance that quickly steals the show in terrarium or greenhouse settings.

Origin

The species Begonia chlorosticta is native to the rainforests of Sarawak (Borneo), where it grows in shady, moist forest floors and rock walls under dense foliage. The 'Red' form is a selected cultivar line with stronger color contrasts, especially popular among terrarium and greenhouse enthusiasts for its distinct appearance.

Characteristics

This begonia forms a compact, somewhat upright plant with ovate to oblong leaves. The upper surface is dark green with numerous bright lime-green dots scattered randomly. The main vein and stems are colored an intense red, creating a strong contrast - especially in young leaves, which often emerge reddish. The underside of the leaves is red to burgundy. The plant grows relatively compact and in ideal conditions quickly forms a full, bushy plant. Flowering is a subtle pale pink and appears in fine panicles, but usually remains subordinate to the foliage.

Care

Light

Provide bright, indirect light. Too bright light can cause leaf damage or color loss, while too little light slows growth and weakens leaf markings. Artificial light is well suited.

Temperature

Between 20 °C and 26 °C is ideal. This tropical species likes a stable, warm microclimate without sudden cooling or drafts.

Substrate

Use an aerated and moisture-retaining mixture, e.g. based on leaf mould, coconut fiber, perlite and a small proportion of sphagnum. Good drainage is essential.

Humidity

At least 70%, preferably higher. This species is sensitive to dry air and thrives best in an enclosed terrarium or greenhouse with ventilation. At low humidity, leaf edges can dry out quickly.

Nutrition

Feed once a month during the growing season with a highly diluted leaf plant fertilizer. In winter, feeding is often unnecessary.

Watering

Keep the substrate continuously slightly moist with demineralized water. Never let it dry out completely, but also avoid stagnant water at the root zone. Give preferably in the morning, and not on the leaf.

Flowering

Flowering is graceful and finely branched, with soft pink flowers on thin stems. Although decorative, the main value of this cultivar clearly remains with the foliage.
