Blc. Chia Lin "New City"

The Blc. Chia Lin 'New City' is a classic and beloved Cattleya hybrid known for its striking, almost velvety flowers in a deep wine-red to ruby color. This vigorous bloomer combines elegant form with intense color, making her one of the most sought-after Cattleyas among lovers of exclusive orchids.

Origin

This hybrid originated from a cross between Brassavola, Laelia and Cattleya species. The cultivar 'New City' is known within this line for its improved flower shape and richer color saturation. It was developed back in the 1980s and has since been appreciated worldwide in both collections and exhibitions.

Characteristics

Blc. Chia Lin 'New City' produces large flowers of about 12-15 cm diameter. The petals are fleshy and well overlapping, creating an impressive appearance. The color is dark ruby red, with a slightly wavy edge and a lip that often reveals even deeper purplish-red hues. The flowers also emit a sweet, slightly spicy fragrance.

This cultivar usually blooms once a year, often in late fall or winter, depending on growing conditions. The plant itself remains fairly compact and grows sympodially, with firm, oval pseudobulbs and leathery leaves.

Care

Light

Lots of bright, filtered light. Direct sunlight in the early morning or late afternoon is well tolerated.

Temperature

Between 20-28°C during the day, not below 14°C at night. This hybrid likes heat but also tolerates moderate temperatures.

Substrate

Use an aerated mixture based on medium bark, possibly supplemented with sphagnum moss for a little more moisture retention.

Humidity

Ideally between 50 and 70%. Ensure good air circulation to avoid fungal problems.

Nutrition

During the growing period, feed weekly with diluted orchid fertilizer (¼ to ½ of the recommended dosage). During the dormant period (after flowering) less frequently.

Watering

Allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Always use demineralized water. Clean rainwater can provide a reasonable alternative, but tap water should be avoided.

Flowering

After the growth phase, the plant forms firm flower buds at the top of mature pseudobulbs. Once the flower opens, it often remains beautiful for two to four weeks, depending on temperature and humidity. A spent inflorescence can be removed without damage once it dries out.
