In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

Brassavola nodosa is an unusual orchid with a rich history and a fragrance that surprises you especially in the evening. This species is especially loved by collectors for its elegant flowers and surprisingly easy care. An excellent choice for those who want to bring a fragrant, botanical classic into their home.

Origin

Brassavola nodosa is native to Central America, from Mexico to Venezuela. It grows there as an epiphyte in warm, tropical forests, often on tree branches where air circulation and light are abundant. In its natural habitat, it blooms several times a year, depending on conditions.

Characteristics

This orchid is known for its slender, gray-green, pencil-like leaves and striking, white-green flowers. The flowers usually open at night, emitting a strong, sweet fragrance reminiscent of jasmine. Hence its nickname Lady of the Night. Each flower consists of narrow, pointed petals and a prominent, white lip in the shape of a heart. The inflorescence can bear several flowers at once.

Care

Light

Brassavola nodosa likes plenty of light. A spot in front of an east, west or even south window is ideal, as long as direct midday sunlight is filtered. The more light it receives, the better the blooms.

Temperature

This species is most comfortable with warm-temperature conditions, between 18 and 28 °C during the day and a slight drop at night. A temperature difference between day and night stimulates flowering.

Substrate

Use an aerated, well-draining substrate based on medium-sized bark, possibly mixed with a little sphagnum for extra moisture control. In a hanging basket or mounted on cork, this species can also develop excellently.

Humidity

A relative humidity between 55 and 70% is ideal. In drier air, regular misting or a humidifier nearby helps.

Nutrition

During the growing season (spring to early fall), use diluted orchid fertilizer (¼ strength) weekly. In the winter months, feeding may be reduced to once a month or even temporarily stopped.

Watering

Allow the substrate to dry out slightly between waterings. In warm months it may be watered more often, while in winter months you water more sparingly. Preferably use demineralized water or clean rainwater at room temperature.

Bloom

Brassavola nodosa can flower several times a year, often after a short dormant period. Flowers appear at the tip of new growth. The fragrance is strongest in the evening hours, making it extra special for lovers of scented plants.
