In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

The Bulbophyllum barbigerum is a rare and conspicuous species within the extensive genus Bulbophyllum. This African orchid immediately attracts attention with its unique flowers, which feature a long, hairy lip. A real eye-catcher for the lover of extraordinary orchids.

Origin

Bulbophyllum barbigerum is native to West and Central Africa, including countries such as Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cameroon, Gabon and the Democratic Republic of Congo. There the species grows as an epiphyte in moist, tropical forests at altitudes from 500 to about 2,500 meters, usually on tree trunks covered with moss or in treetops where air circulation and humidity are high.

Characteristics

This species develops compactly, with small pseudobulbs, each bearing one leathery, oval leaf. The inflorescence is truly unique: from a slender flowering stalk springs a single flower of a deep dark purple to reddish-brown color, of which the long, hairy flower lip is particularly striking. This lip moves at the slightest airflow, which probably aids in natural pollination. The flower has a somewhat musky odor that some collectors find intriguing.

Care

Light

Put the plant in a place with bright, indirect light. Too much sunlight can damage the leaves. In a display case or near an east or north window, the plant usually feels best.

Temperature

This species thrives in warm temperatures between 20 and 28°C during the day, with a night drop to about 16-18°C. Avoid cold air currents or sudden temperature changes.

Substrate

Use an aerated, fine substrate such as fine pine or tree bark mixed with sphagnum moss. This species also does well on a mounted block of sphagnum, provided the humidity is high enough.

Humidity

High humidity is essential: 70% or more is recommended. This can be achieved with a humidifier, terrarium, or by misting daily, depending on the environment.

Nutrition

During the growing period (spring to fall) fertilize lightly weekly with a diluted orchid fertilizer (e.g. 1/4 of the recommended dose). Flush the substrate regularly to prevent salt accumulation.

Watering

Give small amounts of demineralized water regularly. Keep the substrate moist but not soggy. Allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings. In winter, the plant may be slightly drier. Tap water is not good for this species.

Flowering

The flowering period varies, but often falls in spring or summer. The flower appears singly on a long, thin stem. After flowering, the stem dies and can be removed. The flower is short-lived, but impressive and almost surreal in appearance.
