In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

The Bulbophyllum catenulatum is one of those orchids that immediately arouses curiosity. Not because of huge flowers or bright colors, but rather because of the sophistication and playful way in which the flowers appear. It is a species that exudes a certain subtlety and therefore occupies a special place in any collection.

Origin

Bulbophyllum catenulatum is native to Southeast Asia, particularly in areas of Borneo and Sumatra. There, it usually grows on tree branches in moist, warm forests, where its roots adhere firmly to the substrate. The name "catenulatum" refers to the chain-like arrangement of the flowers, which appear to hang like tiny links from a slender flowering stem.

Characteristics

The flowers of this species are small but numerous, appearing in graceful rows along the flowering stem. They range in hues from yellow to reddish-brown, often with subtle dashes or dots that give them extra character. Although the individual flowers are only a few inches in size, their numbers and arrangement make the blooms very striking. The leaves are sturdy and narrow, and the pseudobulbs are compact, giving the plant an elegant, somewhat minimalist appearance.

Care

Light

Place the plant in a bright spot with filtered light. Direct midday sun can cause damage, but morning or evening sun is well tolerated.

Temperature

The species likes warmth and feels best at temperatures between 18-28 °C. Nighttime cooling is allowed, as long as the difference is not too great.

Substrate

An airy mixture of fine tree bark with some sphagnum is ideal. This mimics the conditions in which the species grows in nature and provides adequate moisture retention without suffocating the roots.

Humidity

High humidity (60-80%) is highly recommended. In a nursery or orchid greenhouse, the plant will do best, but it can also thrive in the living room with regular misting.

Nutrition

During the active growing season, fertilize lightly weekly with an orchid nutrient. During dormant periods, this can be reduced.

Watering

Preferably use demineralized water. Keep the substrate constantly slightly moist. Bulbophyllum catenulatum does not tolerate prolonged drought, but neither does it tolerate stagnant water around the roots.

Flowering

The inflorescence is undoubtedly the most unusual aspect of this species. Multiple small flowers appear along an elegant stem and together form an almost dancing whole. Although the individual flowers are short-lived, the successive blooms of several stems can make the plant attractive for weeks. For enthusiasts who love detail and sophistication, this is a true joy to behold.
