In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

The Bulbophyllum medusae is one of the most striking orchids within the immense Bulbophyllum-genus. The flower shapes are so unique, they immediately remind one of the snake hairs of the mythological figure Medusa - hence the name. This orchid is an absolute must-have for collectors who like to add something special to their collection.

Origin

This species is native to the humid rainforests of Southeast Asia, especially in countries such as Thailand, Malaysia and Borneo. There, the Bulbophyllum medusae as an epiphyte on tree branches, where it benefits from constant humidity and good air circulation. The species was described back in the 19th century and has been loved ever since for its bizarre, almost otherworldly flowers.

Characteristics

What the Bulbophyllum medusae makes so special are the flower spikes that fan out like a crown or fan in numerous white to creamy yellow strands. Each inflorescence consists of dozens of thin petals, which together form a lush, almost spider-like appearance. The plant usually blooms once a year, often in late summer or early fall, with flowers that remain beautiful for several days to a week.
The pseudobulbs are small and oval, with one leaf per bulb. The plant remains compact in size, making it suitable for growers with limited space.

Care

The Bulbophyllum medusae thrives best in a warm, moist environment with filtered light - similar to tropical rainforest conditions. An airy epiphyte mix (e.g., fine tree bark with moss) is ideal.

Temperature

Between 18 and 28°C.

Humidity

65% or higher is strongly recommended.

Watering

Keep the substrate slightly moist, but avoid stagnant water or wet substrate. Regular misting or placing a humidifier helps maintain humidity levels.

Air circulation

Essential to prevent mold growth, especially at high humidity levels.

Fertilization

During the growing period, give a highly diluted high-quality orchid fertilizer every other week.

With proper care, the Bulbophyllum medusae will be rewarded with a spectacular display of flowers that should not be missing from any orchid collection.
