In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

Some Cattleyas play with light. Cattleya maxima var. coerulea does just that with cool blue to slate-lilac hues that light up softly in the morning and deepen in the afternoon. The flowers are slender and elegant, with a lip delicately veined in darker blue-violet. In bloom, the plant looks classic and quiet, but the color gives it just that special, collectible accent.

Origin

Maxima comes from the light-rich zones of Ecuador and northern Peru. There, a little air always blows past the plants and the difference between day and night is clearly noticeable. That combination of light, air and rhythm translates in culture to strong growth and reliable flowering.

Characteristics

The plant forms slender pseudobulbs with narrow, sturdy leaves. Multiple, fragrant flowers appear per stem with that distinctive coerulea color: cool, delicate and depending on light and temperature sometimes a little more blue or just lilac. The silhouette remains slender and elegant, exactly what enthusiasts appreciate about Cattleya maxima.

Care

Light

Place the plant in a very bright spot with plenty of indirect sunlight. Morning and late afternoon sun are welcome. Too little light means less flowering.

Temperature

Moderate to warm. During the day, the plant feels comfortable between 18 and 28 °C; at night it may be a few degrees cooler. Avoid cold drafts.

Substrate

Use an airy, coarse bark-based mixture with some charcoal if necessary. Preferably pot a little tighter so that the mixture can dry out quickly and the roots get enough oxygen.

Humidity

Aim for 60 to 80 percent, with constant ventilation. In dry air, you can mist briefly, but allow leaves and growing tips to dry quickly afterwards.

Nutrition

During active growth, fertilize lightly with diluted orchid food once every one to two weeks. Once the shoots mature, the feeding can be reduced.

Watering

Use demineralized water or rainwater. During the growing season, water regularly and allow the substrate to dry slightly in between. In cooler, darker periods, water more sparingly.

Flowering

In our regions, maxima often blooms from late summer to fall. A little more light in the run-up and a clear difference between day and night temperatures help. Protect open flowers from bright afternoon sun and dry, hot air currents so that blooms persist nicely.
