Dendrobium Jairak Chaste is a charming and relatively compact Dendrobium hybrid with an elegant, natural appearance. The plant is prized for its refined flowers, often in soft shades of yellow, cream, peach, or apricot, depending on the clone and the stage of flowering. Due to the influence of Dendrobium lamyaiae, this hybrid often develops a subtle, warm flower color and a graceful growth habit.
This orchid is of interest to enthusiasts who appreciate botanically styled Dendrobiums but still prefer a hybrid that may be slightly more forgiving than some pure species. Dendrobium Jairak Chaste is often kept compact and can be grown in a well-aerated potting mix or mounted on cork or wood.
Origin
Dendrobium Jairak Chaste is a registered cross between Dendrobium Isis × Dendrobium lamyaiae. The hybrid was registered in 2019 by K. Somboonpol. Its pedigree includes three important species: Dendrobium lamyaiae, Dendrobium hercoglossum, and Dendrobium moniliforme.
This background explains many of its characteristics. Dendrobium lamyaiae contributes to the compact growth habit and warm flower color, while Dendrobium moniliforme and Dendrobium hercoglossum influence the slender stems, the delicate flower form, and the need for a clear distinction between active growth and dormant periods.
Characteristics
Dendrobium Jairak Chaste forms slender, reed-like stems with small leaves. Its growth is generally more compact than that of many large Dendrobium hybrids, making this orchid suitable for growers with limited space. With proper care, the plant can bloom from older, partially or completely leafless stems. Therefore, do not discard old stems too quickly: in this type Dendrobium they can still be important for flowering and nutrient storage.
The flowers are delicate and stand out especially for their soft, warm color. Depending on the plant, the flowers may show more yellow, cream, peach, or light apricot tones. The lip may display additional markings or a more intense hue. Some plants may also have a light fragrance, especially in the morning or during warm, sunny weather.
Care
Light
Dendrobium Jairak Chaste prefers plenty of light but does not like harsh midday sun through a window. A spot with bright, filtered light is ideal. Morning sun or late afternoon sun is often well tolerated. Insufficient light usually results in weak growth and little or no flowering.
When grown indoors, an east-facing or lightly shaded south-facing window is often suitable. The leaves should remain firm and fresh green. If they turn yellow or reddish-brown, the plant may be getting too much direct sunlight.
Temperature
This hybrid grows best under moderate conditions. During the day, a temperature of about 18 to 26°C is suitable. At night, the temperature may drop by a few degrees. This natural nighttime drop helps the plant grow stronger and can stimulate flowering.
Because it also has Dendrobium moniliforme in its lineage, the plant can often tolerate slightly cooler periods than truly heat-loving Dendrobiums. However, prolonged cold combined with wet roots is not recommended. In winter, it’s better to keep the plant cooler and drier rather than warm and constantly wet.
Watering
During active growth, when new shoots and roots appear, Dendrobium Jairak Chaste may be watered regularly. Be sure to let the substrate or roots dry out thoroughly afterward. This orchid does not like having its roots wet for extended periods.
Preferably use demineralized water, rainwater, or other soft water at room temperature. Hard tap water can eventually cause salt and lime buildup, especially in plants grown on cork or in a very open growing medium.
In the fall and winter, you can reduce watering, especially once the new stems have matured and the plant is growing less actively. However, do not let the stems shrivel excessively. A brief dry rest period is beneficial, but allowing the plant to dry out completely for an extended period is usually unnecessary when growing indoors.
Humidity
A humidity level of about 60 to 75% is ideal. For a plant mounted on cork or wood, the humidity may be higher, as the roots dry out more quickly. In that case, more frequent misting or soaking is necessary than for a potted plant.
It is important that higher humidity is always combined with good air circulation. Stagnant, moist air can cause mold and rot, especially during the cooler months.
Substrate
Dendrobium Jairak Chaste grows well in a very airy orchid mix, such as fine to medium-coarse bark, possibly with some perlite or sphagnum. The mix should retain moisture briefly but dry out quickly enough.
Mounted cultivation on cork or wood suits the natural growth habit of this hybrid well, but requires more attention. A mounted plant dries out much faster and is therefore particularly suitable for growers who can mist regularly or provide higher humidity.
Fertilization
During the growing season, apply a light dose of orchid fertilizer. A quarter to half the recommended dose is usually sufficient. Fertilize especially when the plant is actively producing new roots and shoots.
During the dormant period, usually in the fall and winter, fertilization can be greatly reduced or temporarily stopped. As soon as new growth becomes visible in the spring, fertilization can be gradually resumed.
Flowering
Dendrobium Jairak Chaste can bloom from older stems, often after the plant has experienced a period of abundant light, slightly cooler nights, and less water. The flowers usually appear at the nodes of the stems and give the plant a delicate, botanical appearance.
For good flowering, it’s important to leave old stems in place. Even after they lose their leaves, they may still produce flowers later on. Remove only stems that are completely dry and dead.
Extra care tip
This Dendrobium grows best when its annual cycle is respected: more water, fertilizer, and warmth during active growth; less water, no heavy fertilizer, and slightly cooler nights as growth matures. It is precisely this contrast between growth and dormancy that helps the plant form strong stems and bloom more profusely later on.
