In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

One of the darkest orchids in the world, Fredclarkeara After Dark "SVO Black Pearl" is a legendary hybrid that fascinates every collector. With its nearly black flowers, sturdy growth habit and rich blooms, this plant is an iconic showpiece among lovers of unusual orchids.

Origin

Fredclarkeara After Dark is a complex cross between Catasetum, Clowesia and Mormodes. The cultivar "SVO Black Pearl," awarded an FCC (First Class Certificate) by the American Orchid Society, is known for its exceptionally dark flowers and perfect flower shape. This hybrid was developed by Fred Clarke of Sunset Valley Orchids (SVO) in California, United States.

Characteristics

"SVO Black Pearl" produces clusters of about 15 to 25 flowers per stem when properly cared for. The flowers are so deep purple they appear almost black and have a satiny sheen. Each flower can measure about 5 cm in diameter and is known for its perfect roundness and symmetrical shape.
The plant grows from tuberous pseudobulbs and has broad, soft green leaves that die in autumn. After the leaves fall off, flowering follows, usually in late autumn or early winter.

Care

Light

Fredclarkeara After Dark needs bright, indirect light. Morning sun is sometimes well tolerated briefly, but protect the plant from bright afternoon sun to avoid leaf burn.

Temperature

During the day, the plant is happiest with a temperature between 23-30°C; at night, the temperature may drop to 15-18°C. A slight difference in temperature encourages good flowering.

Substrate

Use an airy and moisture-permeable substrate, such as one based on fine tree bark and sphagnum. This supports the development of healthy roots.

Humidity

A humidity of 60-75% is ideal. At lower humidity, regular misting is desirable, especially in the growth phase.

Watering

During the active growth period (spring and summer), the plant requires regular watering: keep the substrate slightly moist but not wet. After the leaves die off in autumn, watering should be greatly reduced. During the dormant period, water only when the pseudobulbs begin to shrivel. Use only clean rainwater or demineralized water at room temperature so that no minerals accumulate in the plant.

Nutrition

Fertilize weekly with a balanced orchid fertilizer during the growth phase. Reduce fertilization once the leaves begin to yellow and fall off.

Flowering

Flowering usually follows after the leaves have completely fallen off. Flower stalks with impressive clusters of black flowers grow from the bare pseudobulbs. Flowering can continue for several weeks, depending on growing conditions. After flowering, the plant goes into complete dormancy.
