Hoya archboldiana (Leaf, stem cutting)

Hoya archboldiana is an impressive climbing plant from Papua New Guinea, beloved for its striking flower clusters and sturdy leaves. This species is rarer in cultivation than many other hoya's, but is appreciated by lovers of unusual houseplants for that very reason.

Origin

Hoya archboldiana was discovered in the 1930s during a botanical expedition to Papua New Guinea. The plant grows there in tropical mountain forests, where it meanders up along trees in a humid, warm climate. The species is named after American explorer Richard Archbold.

Characteristics

What these Hoya makes exceptional are the large, waxy flowers that appear in clusters of about 5 to 10. The flowers are reddish to purple with a lighter, sometimes white interior. They have a glossy texture and can grow up to 5 inches across - hefty for a Hoya.

The leaves are oblong, leathery and dark green, with a firm vein texture. In sufficient light, the leaves can also take on a red glow. The plant grows relatively vigorously and, with proper care, produces long tendrils that can take on a nice shape with some guidance.

Care

Light

Hoya archboldiana Likes lots of bright, indirect light. A spot near an east- or west-facing window is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight in summer, which can cause leaf burn.

Temperature

This species thrives best in temperatures between 18 and 26 °C. It does not like cold drafts and should stay above 15 °C in winter.

Substrate

Use an airy, well-drained mixture based on fine bark and coconut chips, for example. Avoid heavy potting soil; it holds too much moisture for too long.

Humidity

High humidity (around 65-80%) is ideal, especially during the growing period. In drier environments, a humidifier or regular misting can help.

Nutrition

During spring and summer you may give a light dose of balanced houseplant nutrition once a month, preferably specifically for epiphytic species. During fall and winter, fertilization is not necessary.

Watering

Let the substrate dry out almost completely before watering again. Preferably use demineralized water or clean rainwater at room temperature. Feet that are too wet are poorly tolerated.

Flowering

With adequate light, nutrition and humidity, can Hoya archboldiana bloom in late spring or summer. Always leave the old flowering stems in place - new blooms often appear in the same spot. The flowers emit a subtle fragrance, especially in the evening.
