In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

An orchid so small and delicate that you would almost overlook it, but with a charm that cannot be ignored. The Hymenorchis javanica is a rare miniature species that fascinates lovers of unusual epiphytes. This species is rarely found in collections and is especially popular with connoisseurs who study botanical miniatures.

Origin

Hymenorchis javanica is native to the island of Java, Indonesia. It grows there in misty mountain forests, usually at altitudes between 800 and 1500 meters, where humidity is high and light is gently filtered through the foliage. As an epiphyte, it grows on tree branches without damaging them.

Characteristics

This orchid is truly minuscule: the leaves are small, oval and leathery, often no larger than a few inches. They form a compact, bushy whole. What makes it unique, however, are the almost transparent, white flowers with a subtle sheen, often only a few millimeters in size. The flowers appear solitary or a few at a time, appearing almost to float on the plant. The blooms are not overwhelming, but they are extremely delicate and elegant.

Care

Light

Give this orchid bright, filtered light. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves. A spot near an east or west window with a light curtain filter is ideal.

Temperature

Daytime temperatures between 18 and 24 °C are perfect, with a slight drop at night. It likes a temperate climate without large temperature changes.

Substrate

Hymenorchis javanica does best mounted on bark or cork, with an airy moss bed as a base. This mimics its natural habitat and prevents root rot.

Humidity

A humidity of at least 70% is desirable. A terrarium or bell jar can help (provided there is plenty of fresh air supply). Regular misting helps, but avoid standing water on the leaves.

Watering

Always use demineralized water, possibly mixed with clean rainwater. Because of its fine roots, it needs regular but moderate watering. Allow the moss to dry slightly in between, without drying out completely.

Nutrition

Feed sparingly with a highly diluted, high-quality orchid fertilizer (1/4th of the recommended dosage) once a month during the growing season.

Flowering

Flowering usually occurs in spring or early summer. The flowers are small, but their bright color and delicate shape make them a visual highlight. They often appear out of nowhere, as a surprise among the fine foliage.
