In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

The Laelia rubescens "semi-alba" is a sophisticated orchid from Central America distinguished by its subtle play of colors and compact growth habit. This botanical beauty is loved by connoisseurs for its graceful blooms and ability to bloom several times a year when properly cared for.

Origin

Laelia rubescens grows naturally in dry forests at elevations between 500 and 1,500 meters in countries such as Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. It is often found there on tree branches or rock faces, where it survives the dry seasons thanks to its sturdy pseudobulbs and tough leaves. The "semi-alba" variety is distinguished from the typical form by its ivory-white flowers with a subtle pink to pale lilac blush in the lip, a charming anomaly much appreciated by orchid collectors.

Characteristics

This compact epiphyte produces oval pseudobulbs topped by one to two leathery leaves. In winter or early spring, it forms slender flowering stems often with five to eight flowers per stem. The flowers are about 4 cm in size and have a slightly sweet fragrance, especially during the day. The "semi-alba" form allows its white petals to contrast with a finely colored lip, giving a bright and fresh overall appearance without being overwhelming. The whole exudes simplicity and sophistication.

Care

Light

This species likes plenty of light, but avoid direct sunlight during the hottest hours. A bright south- or west-facing windowsill with some filtering is ideal.

Temperature

Moderately warm to cool is perfect. Between 18 and 25°C during the day, at night the temperature may drop to 10-15°C. A slight drop in temperature in winter stimulates flowering.

Substrate

Use an aerated, fast-draining substrate based on fine tree bark, possibly mixed with sphagnum moss for extra moisture retention.

Humidity

A relative humidity of 50 to 70 percent is recommended. Regular misting or a humidifier can help with dry indoor air.

Watering

Allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. During the growth phase (spring and summer), watering may be more regular. In winter, keep slightly drier, especially after new shoots form. Make sure the roots do not remain wet between waterings to prevent root rot.

Nutrition

Feed weekly during active growth with a highly diluted orchid fertilizer. Preferably use fertilizer suitable for epiphytic orchids. In winter, feed only once a month.

Flowering

Laelia rubescens usually blooms in late winter or early spring. Sometimes a second bloom follows later in the year. Flowers last up to three weeks and reappear on mature plants every year if properly cared for.
