Monstera adansonii variegated Aurea is one of the most sought-after variegated forms of Monstera adansonii. This selection combines the characteristic perforated leaves of the classic Monkey Mask plant with striking golden-yellow to lime-yellow variegation. No two leaves develop the same way, giving each plant a unique pattern.
In plants with 4 to 5 leaves, the plant’s characteristic appearance often begins to become clearly visible. It is particularly interesting to follow the development of new leaves during this phase, as the amount and distribution of variegation can vary with each new leaf.
Origin
Monstera adansonii is native to large parts of Central and South America, where the species grows as a hemiepiphytic climber in tropical rainforests. In the wild, the plant climbs up tree trunks in search of more light.
The Aurea pattern is caused by a genetic mutation in which parts of the leaf contain less chlorophyll. This results in the distinctive golden-yellow, lime-yellow, or yellow-green patterns that make this plant so popular among collectors. Variegation remains a natural and partly unpredictable process, making each plant unique.
Characteristics
Monstera adansonii variegated Aurea produces elongated leaves with the distinctive natural perforations for which the species is known.
The variegation ranges from:
- golden-yellow sectors
- light yellow spots
- marbled patterns
- partially variegated leaves
What we regularly observe in Aurea varieties is that the color intensity is strongly influenced by lighting conditions. Under bright, indirect light, new leaves often develop a much more distinct contrast between the dark green leaf tissue and the yellow variegation.
As the plant matures and receives support, the leaves typically grow larger and develop more perforations.
Care
:
Light
This plant grows best in plenty of bright, indirect light.
We’ve found that sufficient light is essential to keep the Aurea variegation clearly visible. If there is too little light, new leaves may turn out darker and develop less contrast. However, direct afternoon sun can cause leaf damage.
Temperature
Ideal temperatures range between 18 and 28 °C. Protect the plant from cold drafts and prolonged temperatures below 15 °C.
Potting mix
Use a well-aerated aroid potting mix that retains moisture but also drains well. A mixture of bark, coconut coir, and other airy components usually works very well.
Humidity
A humidity level of 60 percent or higher promotes healthy growth and helps new leaves unfurl beautifully.
Watering
Allow the top layer of the potting mix to dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid letting the roots remain wet for extended periods. Preferably use demineralized water.
Fertilization
During the growing season, a diluted houseplant or aroid fertilizer can be applied regularly.
Growth
Monstera adansonii is naturally a climbing plant. When provided with a moss stick or other climbing support, it will develop New leaves are generally larger and stronger than those that grow downward.
