Paphiopedilum (Prince Edward of York × dianthum f. album) 'Half & Half' × Saint Swithin f. album 'Éternal Serenity' is an exceptional multifloral hybrid within the genus Paphiopedilum. This complex hybrid combines some of the most iconic lines from the Coryopedilum group, focusing on long, graceful petals and rich blooms. The result is an impressive plant with distinct architecture and strong collector's value.
Origin
This hybrid is composed of several well-known multifloral Paphiopedilum lines. Paphiopedilum Prince Edward of York is a classic cross between Paphiopedilum rothschildianum and Paphiopedilum sanderianum , two species known for their long petals and stately flower form.
The influence of Paphiopedilum dianthum and Paphiopedilum Saint Swithin further reinforces this character, particularly through the tendency to bear multiple flowers per inflorescence stem and the characteristic horizontal to slightly pendulous flower segments. The addition f. album in the line indicates selections with lighter, more refined coloration.
This combination creates a hybrid that is genetically strongly focused on shape, size and prolonged flowering.
Characteristics
This Paphiopedilum forms vigorous rosettes with long, broad leaves that are uniformly green in color. The plant slowly develops into a sturdy clump and may form multiple growing points over time.
When the plant reaches maturity, a long flowering stem appears on which several flowers open in succession. The flowers have the typical shoe-shaped lip and long, often horizontally extending to slightly twisted petals characteristic of multifloral Paphiopedilums.
Flower color is usually in a combination of cream, greenish and soft yellow tones, often with subtle streaks or highlights depending on the exact clone. Due to the influence of album forms, the flower usually looks lighter and more refined than in standard Coryopedilum hybrids.
The combination of long petals and multiple flowers per stem gives this hybrid a distinct and almost sculptural appearance.
Care
Light
This multifloral Paphiopedilum grows best in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate slightly more light than many other Paphiopedilum species, but direct sunlight remains risky.
Temperature
This hybrid grows well in warm to moderate temperatures between about 18 and 28 °C.
Substrate
Use an aerated orchid substrate based on fine to medium bark. Good drainage is essential for healthy root development.
Humidity
Humidity between about 60 and 80 percent promotes stable growth, combined with adequate air circulation.
Watering.
Keep the substrate slightly moist, but avoid keeping it wet for long periods of time. Preferably use demineralized water.
Feeding
During the growing period, a slightly diluted orchid food can be given regularly.
Flowering
When mature, the plant can produce a long flowering stem on which several flowers open in succession. This can significantly extend the flowering period and make the plant an impressive centerpiece in a collection.
