Paphiopedilum coccineum

Paphiopedilum coccineum is a rare and coveted species within the slipper orchids. With its compact growth habit and striking, deep red flower, this orchid is a real eye-catcher for the collector looking for something special. This species is rare in nature and grows in specific, hard-to-access locations, adding to its exclusive nature.

Origin

Paphiopedilum coccineum is native to the cool, moist mountain regions of northern Vietnam, at altitudes around 1,500 meters. It grows there as a terrestrial orchid among humus-rich soils, often in shady forest areas. Because of its limited range and ecological niche, this species is extremely scarce in the wild.

Characteristics

This compact orchid is distinguished mainly by its unique flower color: deep crimson with a glossy texture. The flower has the characteristic slipper shape of the genus, with an elegantly convex puch and narrow petals curled backwards. The leaves are dark green, narrow and lightly marbled. Usually blooms Paphiopedilum coccineum with one flower per stem, which adds to the intensity of the color.

Care

Paphiopedilum coccineum requires a cool to temperate climate with adequate humidity (around 60-80%) and a well-drained substrate. A mixture of fine bark, perlite and some humus works well. Avoid direct sunlight: bright, filtered light is ideal. Don't leave the roots in moist substrate for too long, but don't leave the roots dry for too long either. Preferably use rainwater or filtered water, and fertilize lightly with a balanced orchid fertilizer. In winter, provide a light dormant period with slightly lower temperatures (around 17°C) to encourage flowering.
