In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

A rare reintroduction of a botanical masterpiece: Paphiopedilum fairrieanum 'California Remake' is a particularly refined form of this species, carefully selected and recrossed in California. This clone is known for its improved flower form and strikingly bright coloration, which evokes deep admiration even among botanical orchid enthusiasts.

Origin

Paphiopedilum fairrieanum is native to the eastern Himalayas, where it grows on humus-rich, moist slopes at medium elevations. This 'California Remake' is a modern remake of a classic type, created in the US through selective breeding of top clones from old lines. Named after this California origin, the clone offers a combination of traditional elegance and modern quality.

Features

This plant forms compact rosettes with beautifully curved, gray-green leaves. The flower is a true work of art: a uniquely shaped slipper (shoe-shaped lip) with vertical stripes in deep wine-red hues, surrounded by pale green and ivory-white petals that curl outward wavy. The flower shape is perfectly symmetrical, with a slightly wider dorsal sepal than usual in standard fairrieanum.
The inflorescence usually appears solitary on a short, sturdy stalk. Despite its refined appearance, this clone is surprisingly robust.

Care

Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, especially in summer.

Temperature

Grows best in cool to moderate temperatures: between 16 and 24°C during the day, with slight cooling at night.

Substrate

An aerated mixture based on fine bark and possibly sphagnum moss. Do not add calcareous materials.

Humidity

Keep humidity between 60 and 80%. Regular spraying or use of a humidifier is recommended.

Nutrition

Use a balanced low-nitrogen orchid fertilizer diluted to ¼ of the recommended dose. Fertilize only during active growth.

Watering

Use only demineralized water or clean rainwater if necessary. Keep the substrate slightly moist but not wet. Always allow the top layer to dry briefly between waterings. Tap water should be avoided.

Flowering

Paphiopedilum fairrieanum usually blooms once a year, usually in fall or early winter. Flowering can last up to 8 weeks. This clone is known for its consistent flowering, even in slightly less than ideal conditions.
