Paphiopedilum Hung Sheng Eagle (gigantifolium × rothschildianum) is an impressive hybrid within the genus Paphiopedilum and belongs to the so-called multifloral lady's slippers. This hybrid combines the vigorous foliage of Paphiopedilum gigantifolium with the iconic flower shape of Paphiopedilum rothschildianum. The result is a plant with a stately appearance and long flower spikes on which multiple flowers can appear simultaneously. Within collections, this hybrid is valued for its strong architecture and the characteristic horizontal petals so typical of rothschildianum-like Paphiopedilums.
Origin
Paphiopedilum Hung Sheng Eagle is a horticultural hybrid resulting from a cross between Paphiopedilum gigantifolium and Paphiopedilum rothschildianum. Both parent species belong to the group of multifloral Paphiopedilums known for their large leaves and spectacular flowers.
Paphiopedilum rothschildianum is native to Borneo, where it grows on calcareous slopes in mountainous forests. Paphiopedilum Gigantifolium has a similar growth habit and is known for its large leaf size and robust plant structure.
By combining these species, breeders have developed a hybrid that combines the vigorous foliage growth of gigantifolium with the elegant, horizontal petals of rothschildianum.
Characteristics
Paphiopedilum Hung Sheng Eagle forms broad rosettes with long, sturdy leaves that are a uniform green color. The plant has a vigorous growth habit and can reach a rather impressive size when mature.
Once the plant is mature, it develops a long flowering stem on which multiple flowers may appear. The flowers have the typical shoe-shaped lip characteristic of the genus Paphiopedilum, combined with long horizontal petals that are often slightly twisted or striped.
The flower color typically consists of a combination of greenish, cream-colored, and brown-red hues with distinct stripes. Due to its elongated petals and stately flower stalk, this hybrid has a very distinctive appearance that strongly resembles the well-known Rothschildianum line.
Care
Light
Paphiopedilum Hung Sheng Eagle grows best in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest hours of the day.
Temperature
This hybrid grows well in moderate to warm temperatures between approximately 18 and 26 °C. A slight drop in temperature at night can help promote flower bud development.
Medium
Use an airy orchid medium made from fine to medium-sized bark. This ensures a good balance between moisture retention and ventilation around the roots.
Humidity
A humidity level between approximately 50 and 70 percent is generally suitable for healthy growth.
Watering
Paphiopedilum species do not have pseudobulbs and should therefore not be allowed to dry out completely. Keep the growing medium slightly moist and water as soon as it begins to dry out. Preferably use demineralized water or rainwater.
Fertilization
During the growing season, a lightly diluted orchid fertilizer can be applied regularly. In winter, the amount of fertilizer can be reduced.
Flowering
When the plant is mature, a long flower spike may develop with multiple flowers. The flowers open They usually bloom one after another and can remain decorative for a long time. After flowering, the plant forms new growth points that may bloom again later.
