Origin

This hybrid was created from a cross between Paphiopedilum Ice Age and Paphiopedilum Icy Icy Wind, both known for their cold tolerance and light flower colors. The cultivar "Mrs. White" was selected for its nearly flawless white flower with a slightly transparent cap and a finely shaped pouche slip. It was created within specialized breeding lines focused on cool growing conditions. From this has emerged a very easy beginner orchid for the enthusiast who does not like to turn the stove up high. It is thus a durable orchid that is good for the wallet.

Characteristics

"Mrs. White" produces one elegant flower per stem, with a flower diameter of about 10 to 12 cm. The inflorescence is bright white with a velvety surface, with some specimens showing a faint silvery-gray grain in the upper sepals. The foliage is gray-green and marbled, with a compact, graceful growth habit that shows up well in smaller collections. At rest, the plant retains its ornamental value due to its attractive leaf pattern.

Care

Light

Place this Paphiopedilum in a very bright place without direct sunlight. East or west windows are ideal. Avoid bright afternoon sunlight to prevent leaf burn.

Temperature

This hybrid grows best in moderate to cool temperatures. 16-24 °C during the day, at night it may safely drop to 12 °C. A cool night drop promotes flowering.

Substrate

Use an aerated and moisture-retaining substrate based on fine bark and possibly peat moss. A small percentage of charcoal can help keep the medium fresh, but is not necessary.

Humidity

A humidity level between 50 and 70 percent is ideal. With lower humidity, regular spraying around the plant can help, without spraying directly on the flower.

Watering

Water regularly with demineralized water or clean rainwater so that the substrate remains evenly slightly moist. Do not let the medium dry out completely, but also avoid wet feet.

Feeding

During the growing season, use a diluted orchid fertilizer (1/4 strength) once every two weeks. In winter, this may be reduced to once a month or stopped altogether.

Flowering

Flowering usually occurs in late fall or early winter. The flower remains beautiful for up to six weeks. Water slightly less during the flowering period and avoid temperature fluctuations to prevent bud drop.
