Paphiopedilum Queenslander 'The Queen' SM/JOGA is an impressive hybrid within the genus Paphiopedilum. This cultivar is known for its large, powerfully shaped flowers and pronounced markings in the petals. The addition SM/JOGA refers to a crowning by the Japan Orchid Growers Association, indicating that this clone was awarded for its quality and flower shape. Within collections, this cultivar is valued for its stately appearance and strong flowering performance.
Origin
Paphiopedilum Queenslander is a horticultural hybrid resulting from crosses within the genus Paphiopedilum. This group of hybrids often includes species known for their large flowers, sturdy flowering stems and contrasting patterns.
Although this cultivar is itself a hybrid, the ancestors of Paphiopedilum have their origins in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia. Many species there grow terrestrially or lithophytically in humus-rich forest soils or on calcareous rocks in shaded forest areas.
The selection 'The Queen' is a specific clone chosen for its flower quality. JOGA's SM (Silver Medal) designation confirms that this plant was highly rated during a judging.
Characteristics
Paphiopedilum Queenslander 'The Queen' forms sturdy rosettes with broad, even green leaves. A vigorous flowering stem develops from a mature growing point, usually bearing one large flower.
The flower has the typical shoe-shaped lip characteristic of Paphiopedilum. The broad petals often show a distinctive pattern of stripes or spots in shades of green, cream, brown or purple. The lip forms a distinct contrast to the rest of the flower and gives the plant its characteristic appearance.
With its sturdy flower structure and large flower diameter, this cultivar makes a strong impression when in bloom. The flowers can also remain beautiful for a long time, which is an important feature of many Paphiopedilum hybrids.
Care
Light
Paphiopedilum Queenslander grows best in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, especially in the summer months, to prevent leaf damage.
Temperature
This hybrid grows well in moderate temperatures between about 17 and 25°C (77 and 77°F). A slight drop in temperature at night can help develop flower buds.
Substrate
Use an aerated orchid substrate based on fine to medium bark. This provides a good balance of moisture retention and ventilation around the roots.
Humidity
A humidity between about 50 and 70 percent is usually appropriate for healthy growth.
Watering.
Paphiopedilum does not have pseudobulbs and therefore should not be allowed to dry out completely. Keep the substrate slightly moist and water as soon as the substrate begins to dry up. Preferably use demineralized water or rainwater.
Nutrition
During the growing period, a slightly diluted orchid nutrition can be given regularly. During the winter period, feeding can be reduced.
Flowering
A mature plant usually forms one large flower per flowering stem. The flower may remain beautiful for several weeks to months. After flowering, the plant develops new growth points that may flower again in later seasons.
