Phalaenopsis David Lim is one of the best-known Polychilos hybrids and combines two iconic botanical species from Indonesia. This special remake uses the tetraploid clone Phalaenopsis amboinensis 'Patricia' (4N) together with Phalaenopsis gigantea 'Mother of Giants', resulting in a hybrid that combines the characteristic variegation of amboinensis with the vigorous growth and impressive foliage of gigantea.
What makes this hybrid attractive to collectors is that mature plants often become increasingly impressive. As the plant builds up more foliage, flowering abundance and flower quality typically increase as well.
Origin
Phalaenopsis David Lim was originally registered in 1974 as a primary hybrid between Phalaenopsis amboinensis and Phalaenopsis gigantea.
Both parents are from Indonesia. Phalaenopsis amboinensis grows in the Moluccas and Sulawesi and is known for its striking banded pattern and long-lasting flowering stems. Phalaenopsis gigantea is native to Borneo and is one of the largest species within the genus, with impressively broad leaves and long flowering stems.
For this remake, the award-winning clone 'Patricia' (4N) was selected to achieve a better flower shape and a more compact plant structure.
Characteristics
Phalaenopsis David Lim develops broad, sturdy leaves that are clearly larger than those of most standard Phalaenopsis hybrids. The influence of gigantea is particularly evident in the foliage and vigor.
The flowers typically have a warm yellow, golden yellow, or orange-yellow base color with striking reddish-brown bands and stripes. This creates an exotic pattern strongly reminiscent of the natural appearance of Phalaenopsis amboinensis.
The flower segments are firm and waxy in texture. Thanks to the influence of the tetraploid amboinensis, the flowers are often fuller and better formed than in standard David Lim hybrids.
An additional trait that many enthusiasts appreciate is the fresh citrus-like scent, which is particularly noticeable on warmer days.
Care
Light
This hybrid grows best in bright, indirect light. Compared to many other botanical Phalaenopsis, this hybrid also tolerates a slightly shadier location.
Temperature
Temperatures between 20 and 30 °C are ideal. This is a warm-weather hybrid that does not require a distinct dormant period.
Substrate
Use an airy orchid medium based on medium-sized bark, so that the roots receive sufficient ventilation.
Humidity
A humidity level of 60 to 80 percent generally ensures the best growth.
Watering
Allow the substrate to dry out slightly between waterings, but avoid prolonged drying out. Preferably use demineralized water.
Fertilization
During active growth, a lightly diluted orchid fertilizer can be applied regularly.
Flowering
One of the most appreciated characteristics of this hybrid is that the flower spikes often remain active for years. As long as a flower spike remains green, it is usually best not to cut it off. Under good conditions, the same spike can produce new flowers for several years.
