In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

The Phalaenopsis Purple Martin x Phalaenopsis violacea is a botanically interesting hybrid that will especially appeal to lovers of fragrant orchids and compact plants. This hybrid combines the deep purple and growth habit of Purple Martin with the strong fragrance and warm colors of Phalaenopsis violacea.

Origin

This hybrid originated from two botanically valuable species. Phalaenopsis violacea is native to the tropical lowland forests of Malaysia and Sumatra, where it lives in a warm and humid climate. Purple Martin is itself already a primary hybrid (Phal. pulcherrima × Phal. violacea), so this plant genetically leans heavily toward violacea. This is reflected in both fragrance, inflorescence and flower form.

Characteristics

The flowers of this hybrid are notable for their vibrant, purple-pink color with a velvety sheen. The flower lip is strikingly contrasting white with shades of yellow and red, creating an elegant detail. The fragrance is sweet, fruity and distinct, especially during the day. The plant remains relatively compact, with thick, glossy leaves and a sturdy leaf position. Under ideal conditions, this hybrid can flower several times a year.

Care

Light

Give the plant bright, indirect light. Avoid bright midday sun, as this can burn the leaves.

Temperature

A constant temperature between 20 and 28 °C is ideal. This hybrid does not like cold nights.

Substrate

Use an airy orchid substrate based on fine tree bark, possibly mixed with sphagnum moss for some extra moisture control.

Humidity

Aim for a humidity of 60 to 80 percent. In dry areas, a humidifier or bowl of water and pebbles can help.

Nutrition

Feed monthly with a diluted orchid fertilizer (¼ to ½ dose) during the growth phase. In winter, this may be less.

Watering

Preferably give demineralized water (or possibly clean rainwater at room temperature) about once a week. Let the substrate almost dry out first. Tap water has skewed ratios of minerals, which can be harmful to this orchid.

Flowering

The plant usually blooms on new flower stems, but old stems can sometimes re-branch. So feel free to leave these as long as they are healthy. Flowering is prolonged and intensely fragrant.
