Origin

The Philodendron domesticum originates in the tropical rain forests of South America. In its natural habitat, this species grows up along tree trunks as a climbing plant. The variegated-variant was created by human selection and is not found in the wild.

Characteristics

This Philodendron is distinguished by its arrow-shaped, elongated leaves that range from deep emerald green to light cream and subtle pink tones. The variegation patterns are unique on each plant. As the plant ages, the leaves can become larger and even more striking. The growth habit is smooth, with sturdy stems carrying the large leaves.

Care

Light

Place this plant in a bright spot without direct sunlight. A spot with bright, filtered light promotes healthy growth and keeps the variegation nice and sharp.

Temperature

A constant room temperature between 18 °C and 26 °C is ideal. Protect the plant from draughts and cold temperatures below 15 °C.

Substrate

Use an airy, well-draining substrate based on coconut fiber, bark and peat. This prevents root rot and provides sufficient hold for climbing growth.

Humidity

A high humidity of 60% or more is ideal. Mist the leaves regularly or use a humidifier to create a tropical microclimate.

Nutrition

During the growing season (spring and summer) feed once a month with a balanced fertilizer for foliage plants. In fall and winter, once every two months is sufficient.

Water moderately. Let the top layer of the substrate dry out before watering again. Preferably use demineralized water or clean rainwater to avoid mineral buildup and mineral imbalance.

Flowering

The Philodendron domesticum variegated rarely blooms as a houseplant. When flowering occurs, the plant forms inconspicuous inflorescences in the form of a bract and spike. The plant is especially valued for its impressive foliage.
