In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

Phragmipedium kovachii is undoubtedly one of the most impressive orchids in the world. With its huge flowers in deep, vibrant shades of purple and pink, this species has acquired an almost mythical status among collectors and enthusiasts. It is a species that stands out not only for its size, but also for its rarity and complex requirements for its care. A true crown jewel for the experienced orchid enthusiast.

Origin

This species is endemic to the Andes of northern Peru, where it grows on calcareous slopes at high altitudes. It was not officially discovered and described until 2001, but it soon had a legendary reputation. Its natural habitat is cool and very humid, with misty conditions and a constant supply of mineral-poor water.

Characteristics

The flowers of Phragmipedium kovachii are exceptionally large, reaching up to 20 centimeters across, and are deep purple-pink in color, sometimes with subtle transitions to lighter pink or white in the center. The flower model is reminiscent of a typical "slipper orchid," but on a monumental scale.
The plant itself forms broad, pale green leaves in a fan growth. In good conditions, it can produce several flower stems at once, each with one or sometimes two sequentially flowering flowers.

Care

Light

Phragmipedium kovachii requires bright, filtered light but no direct sunlight. A spot with eastern or western light is ideal, possibly supplemented with artificial light.

Temperature

During the day, a temperature of 20-24 °C is suitable. At night, it may cool down to 12-16 °C. Provide a clear difference between day and night temperatures.

Substrate

Use an aerated substrate based on finely ground bark, sphagnum moss and clay pellets. The substrate should drain well, yet retain adequate moisture. This species appreciates a neutral to slightly alkaline pH.

Humidity

A humidity of 70-90% is ideal. Daily misting or the use of a humidifier is highly recommended, especially in dry home environments.

Nutrition

Use a very dilute orchid fertilizer (1/4 of the recommended dose) during the growing season, preferably a low-nitrogen variety. Fertilize weekly during the active growing season, less so during dormant periods.

Watering

This species likes a constant supply of clean, demineralized water. The roots should never dry out completely, but also not stand in stagnant water or too much.

Flowering

Flowering is mostly solitary flower per stem, but impressive for its size and intense color. Each flower lasts about two to four weeks. With proper care, a mature plant can bloom several times a year.
