Platycerium elephantotis

The Platycerium elephantotis is a striking appearance within the genus of staghorn ferns. Where most species are characterized by deeply incised leaves, this variety surprises with broad, wavy leaves that are reminiscent of the shape of an elephant's ear. A plant with an almost sculptural appearance, which lends itself perfectly as an eye-catcher in a contemporary interior.

Origin

This species is native to tropical parts of Africa, where it grows epiphytically on trees. In its natural habitat, it benefits from filtered light and high humidity, conditions that you can also partially recreate indoors.

Characteristics

The Platycerium elephantotis is distinguished by its broad, smooth blades without pronounced indentations. Unlike its finely branched relatives, it grows rather in an undulating, almost minimalist form. Young plants quickly turn fresh green and grow relatively smoothly, making it accessible to enthusiasts with a little less patience. As the plant ages, it develops an impressive volume and can become a true statement in a living room, conservatory or office space.

Care

Light

Give the plant a bright location, but avoid direct sunlight. Filtered daylight (such as at a north or east-facing window) is preferred.

Temperature

This species likes a constant room temperature. Avoid drafts and temperatures below 15°C. When temperatures reach or exceed 30°C, make sure there is good ventilation and a very high humidity in order not to let the plant dry out. So high temperatures the plant can withstand well, provided that it is watched out for drying out.

Substrate

Being an epiphyte, the Platycerium grows best on an open, airy substrate such as fine bark mix for epiphytic plants. You can also mount it on a shelf, as is often done in botanical gardens. Use a small amount of moss to keep the roots from drying up too quickly.

Humidity

Higher humidity (55-80%) benefits this species, but it also tolerates drier room air provided you keep a close eye on it.

Nutrition

During the growing season (spring and summer) you may give some diluted orchid food once a month.

Watering

Allow the substrate to dry partially between waterings. Preferably use demineralized water or clean rainwater at room temperature. If the plant is growing on a shelf, you can dip it or mist it well at the roots.

Bloom

Like all Platyceriums, this species is not known for flowers. Its strength lies in its graceful foliage and sculptural form, which only gets more impressive with age.
