In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

The 'Horn's Surprise', with its hybrid origin, surprises with a versatility of leaf shapes and a robust growth habit. This specimen, named after 'Darwin' for its evolutionary uniqueness, is a must-have for the adventurous plant collector. This rare houseplant is a unique species of the staghorn fern genus. The Horn's Surprise stands out for its unexpected leaf shapes and artful way of growing.

Origin

The Platycerium Horn's Surprise is a rare and distinctive variety within the genus Platycerium (also known as staghorn fern). This particular cultivar is a cross between a Platycerium madagascariense and a Platycerium aicicone-Africa. The cross originally came from grower Jerry Horn, from Florida. Because it is a cross, the origin of the plant can determine what it will look like. Several similar crosses have been bred, some with different looks. For example, other well-known similar crosses are the Platycerium Dawboy and the Platycerium Larry Weed.

Features

The 'Horn's Surprise' is distinguished by its graceful, antler-like fertile leaves that display a vibrant green to gray-green, depending on light conditions. The sterile bracts form a protective base and can take on a brownish hue over time, adding to the plant's natural aesthetic. The surface of the leaves is covered with a fine layer of felt, which helps retain moisture and regulate temperature.

Care

To maintain the Platycerium 'Horn's Surprise' thrive optimally, it is important to consider the following care guidelines:

Light

Place the plant in a spot with bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent leaf burn.

Water

Keep the plant slightly moist by immersing it in water once a week. Afterwards, let it drain well. Make sure the substrate does not dry out completely between waterings.

Humidity

High humidity, preferably between 60-85%, is ideal. Regular spraying or the use of a humidifier can contribute to a healthy microclimate.

Temperature

The plant thrives at temperatures between 17°C and 28°C. Protect it from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.

Nutrition

During the growing season, a dilute solution of a balanced fertilizer can be applied monthly to support growth.

With its unique pedigree and striking appearance, the Platycerium 'Horn's Surprise' a true asset to any plant lover looking for an unusual and low-maintenance epiphyte.
