In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

An orchid that does not go unnoticed: the Psychopsis papilio, with its unusual inflorescence, looks like a tropical butterfly in flight. This botanical species is rare in culture and appreciated for its prolonged and successive flowering. Ideal for the true enthusiast who loves something exceptional.

Origin

Psychopsis papilio is native to tropical rainforests of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Trinidad. There it grows as an epiphyte high in trees, where it benefits from warm temperatures, high humidity and filtered light. The species was introduced to Europe as early as the 19th century and was even behind the orchid craze of the time.

Characteristics

The nickname "butterfly orchid" does not refer to the famous Phalaenopsis, but to the spectacular flower of this species. With its long, stalk-like flower parts and wide upper petals, the flower looks stunningly like a butterfly. It usually blooms one flower at a time per stem, but can sustain that for months or even years on the same flower stem. The leaves are leathery and dark green with purple undersides, often with slightly mottled markings.

A mature plant usually produces one to three flower stems that continue to grow continuously. So never cut off the stems, even if they temporarily stop flowering.

Care

Light

Give this orchid plenty of bright, indirect light. Too little light inhibits flowering. Avoid direct sunlight in the afternoon, especially in summer.

Temperature

Ideal daytime temperatures are between 22 and 28°C, with a nighttime drop to 18-20°C. Protect from drafts and sudden temperature changes.

Substrate

Use an aerated orchid substrate based on medium-sized bark. Additions such as sphagnum or tree fern fiber can help keep the moisture balance stable.

Humidity

Psychopsis requires a humidity level of at least 60%. Place it near other plants if necessary or use a humidifier.

Watering

Give small amounts of demineralized water regularly. Don't let the substrate dry out, but don't let it get soggy either. Water slightly less frequently in winter.

Nutrition

During the growing season, use a balanced orchid fertilizer in low concentration every two weeks. In winter, this can be reduced to once a month or less.

Flowering

Flowering is unique: each flower stalk can remain active for many years, re-blooming every few weeks. So never cut away a spent stem. Flowers often appear one at a time and remain beautiful for about two to three weeks each. A healthy plant can give flowers all year round.
