Vanda lamellata "Okinawa"

Vanda lamellata 'Okinawa' is a graceful and compact orchid variety with a special origin. Originating from the Ryukyu Islands in Japan, including Okinawa, this variety is distinguished from other lamellata types by its fine construction, strikingly drawn flowers and excellent suitability for enthusiasts who have limited space but do not want to compromise on beauty and botanical value.

Origin

The species Vanda lamellata is native to parts of the Philippines and has spread throughout Southeast Asia in various forms. However, the 'Okinawa' form is rarer and grows wild on trees in the subtropical forests of the Japanese archipelago. This particular population has developed in isolation, resulting in a more compact growth pattern and slightly finer flowers with characteristic markings.

Characteristics

Vanda lamellata 'Okinawa' produces multiple, elegant flowers on a short flowering stem. Flowers are cream to pale yellow with distinctive, maroon to purple stripes on the sepals and petals. The lip is often bright white with a soft yellow center. Because of its modest size, this Vanda is excellent for breeding on a block or in an open basket. Despite its smaller size, it remains a standout within a collection.

This variety is known for its strong fragrance, especially in the morning hours, and its ability to flower several times a year under the right conditions.

Care

Like other Vandas, 'Okinawa' requires plenty of light, preferably filtered sunlight or a spot in front of a south-facing window. She likes a warm, airy environment and thrives in humidity levels between 65% and 80%. Daily misting is essential to keep the roots hydrated, especially when grown without substrate. During the growing season, a balanced orchid fertilizer may be given monthly, diluted to at least half strength.

Note that despite its smaller size, this compact Vanda requires the same attention as its larger relatives - but in return, it has spectacular blooms.
