Origin
Vanda merrillii var. rotorii is native to Luzon in the Philippines. In this area, the plant grows in warm, moist forests with lots of air movement and filtered light.
The species grows there mostly epiphytically on trees, sometimes in limestone-rich areas where the climate remains warm and humid. In this natural environment, the roots are regularly moistened by rain and dew, then can quickly dry out again due to continuous air circulation.
Characteristics
Vanda merrillii var. rotorii remains more compact than many other Vanda species and forms sturdy, leathery leaves that are dense along the stem. The plant also develops a strong network of aerial roots, which is characteristic of healthy-growing Vandas.
The flowers appear in small clusters and have a striking, contrasting appearance. Based on flowering, the flowers are deep red to dark burgundy in color, with a creamy white center and a lip that combines shades of yellow, cream and light pink. This color combination gives the plant a very distinct and almost exotic appearance. Moreover, the flowers are often fragrant, especially in the morning hours.

Care
Light
Give this Vanda plenty of bright, indirect light. Mild morning sun or late afternoon sun is usually well tolerated, as long as the leaves do not burn.
Temperature
This species grows best in warm conditions, with day temperatures between 24 and 30 °C and night temperatures around 18 to 22 °C.
Substrate
This orchid is preferably grown in a wooden Vanda basket without substrate, so that the aerial roots can grow freely and ventilate well.
Humidity
A humidity of at least 60 percent is desirable. In drier climates, regular misting helps keep the plant vital.
Watering
The roots may get wet regularly, but they must be allowed to dry out properly afterwards. Daily spraying or dipping with demineralized water several times a week usually works well.
Nutrition
During the growing period, a slightly diluted orchid food can be given weekly. In between, it is good to flush regularly with demineralized water.
Flowering
Under stable conditions, Vanda merrillii var. rotorii can flower more than once a year. The flowers usually remain decorative for quite some time and spread a pleasant fragrance, especially in the morning.
