Origin
Formerly, the orchid genus Barkeria belonged to the genus Epidendrum. Originally, this genus occurs in Central and South America. The name Barkeria comes from the botanist George Barker, the first person to import and cultivate species of this genus.
Characteristics
The Barkeria is a deciduous orchid. They grow largely epiphytic and grow thick roots. Species of this genus can be crossed fairly easily with closely related genera, such as the Cattleya, Brassavola and the Laelia.
Care
In winter, little watering is allowed. This may be built up again once the first growth returns in spring. They are relatively easy orchids, which are fairly drought-resistant. Be sure that there should be good air movement at the roots and no drafts. A fairly constant temperature is something this orchid likes.
