Lycopodium belongs to the tribe Pterophyta, the fern-like species. Lycopodiums are also known as wolf claws or clubmosses and, in addition to being orchids one of the most popular plants for in a terrarium. Lycopodiums, like ferns, spread via spores. The scaly leaves and growth habit of the plant are reminiscent of that of moss, hence the nickname club moss. In the tips of the branches grow cones that contain spores. These spores were formerly used in photography and fireworks because of their flammable properties. There are both epiphytic and terrestrial species. The most popular species are Lycopodium squarrosum, Lycopodium phlegmarioides, Lycopodium clavatum (common wolf claw) and Lycopodium annotinum (stinging wolf claw).
