The Odontoglossum was first named in 1816 by Karl Sigismund Kunth. Today, this genus of orchids as a synonym of the Oncidium considered. They like to be in cool to moderate tropical climate. The flowers that this orchid gets are very popular because of the striking colors and patterns in the flowers. Most species grow epiphytic in the wild and originally grow in Central and South America. Species that grow naturally high in the mountains can get up to 150 flowers per bloom (such as the Odontoglossum cirrhosum). Species that grow lower can only get 20. Species that are popular as houseplant include the Odontoglossum coronarium, Odontoglossum pulchellum and the Odontoglossum grande (Tiger orchid).
