The Pleurothallis is a small orchid, found particularly on the American continent are native to nature. The epicenter of the species is in the high Andes in Colombia. They are often small species with small flowers, but with very unusual colors and shapes. The Pleurothallis is particularly popular in terrariums and paludariums. Another name for these orchids is "Bonnet Orchids." The scientific name is derived from Greek and means "rib-like branches." There are both terrestrial and epiphytic species within this genus, making it a very diverse orchid genus. In 2004, however, many species were moved into other genera. Genera with similar characteristics include the Dracula, Masdevallia, Restrepia and the Stelis. Among the most popular Pleurothallis orchids are Pleurothallis grobyi, Pleurothallis dressleri and Pleurothallis sonderiana.
