In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

Anoectochilus formosanus is a striking jewel orchid known for its elegant leaf markings and relatively easy adaptation to life in a terrarium or warm living room. Cherished for generations in Asian medicine, this species is also visually one of the most impressive members of the genus.

Origin

This species is native to Taiwan, where it grows in shady, cool forests at altitudes between 400 and 1,000 meters. There it nests in the thick moss of decaying tree roots and humus-rich soils, under a dense canopy of foliage that blocks out bright sunlight.

Characteristics

The leaves of Anoectochilus formosanus are dark green to brownish-black, velvety in texture, and laced with a sharply contrasting network of copper-colored to bright golden-green veins. The veins run in symmetrical, almost geometric patterns across the leaf surface. The plant remains fairly compact and, with proper care, forms a groundcover carpet of glossy foliage. In bloom, it forms a thin stem with small, white with purplish-pink flowers very reminiscent of miniature orchid flowers.

Care

Light

Provide bright, filtered light or partial shade. Avoid direct sunlight; it causes leaf burn.

Temperature

A temperature between 18 °C and 24 °C is ideal. The plant tolerates slight nighttime cooling, but not cold drafts.

Substrate

Use an airy, moisture-retaining mix of chopped sphagnum, leaf compost and a little bark. Provide plenty of oxygen around the roots.

Humidity

High humidity (75-90%) is very important. A closed (but ventilated) terrarium or orchid cabinet is perfect.

Nutrition

During the growing season, give a very light feed (orchid fertilizer) once a month, diluted to a quarter of the normal dosage.

Watering

Keep the substrate evenly moist with demineralized water. Never allow to dry out completely, but also avoid standing water around the roots.

Flowering

Flowering usually occurs in fall or winter and lasts for several weeks. The flowers are delicate and refined, but the real showpiece remains the unusual foliage.
