In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

This Anoectochilus sp. closely resembles the cultivar 'Wizard of Oz,' which is loved for its compact growth, dark leaf color and subtle reddish-brown veins. It is an ideal species for those looking for a jewel orchid with an understated, yet sophisticated look - perfect for terrariums or warm windowsills with adequate humidity.

Origin

Although the exact species name is unknown, the origin of this plant is believed to be in Southeast Asia. Its form bears a strong resemblance to selections of Anoectochilus roxburghii or related hybrids brought into cultivation for their ornamental value. Like most jewel orchids, this plant grows wild in moist, humus-rich forest soils under dense foliage.

Characteristics

The leaves are round to oval and dark green to almost black in color, with a soft, velvety texture. What distinguishes this form is the fine network of reddish-brown to coppery veins, which spread in an elegant pattern across the leaf surface. The veins shine subtly in the right light without being bright or contrasting. The underside of the leaf has a reddish tinge along the main vein. The plant remains compact and slowly forms multiple rosettes.

Care

Light

Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, especially during the warmer months, to prevent leaf burn. Artificial light (LED) in a terrarium is also suitable.

Temperature

The ideal temperature is between 18 °C and 24 °C. This plant tolerates slight nighttime cooling, but avoid temperatures below 15 °C.

Substrate

Use an airy, moisture-retaining substrate, such as a mix of chopped sphagnum, leaf compost and a little fine tree bark. The substrate should be well-drained so that the roots do not suffocate.

Humidity

High humidity (75-90%) is important. This plant does well in an enclosed, well-ventilated terrarium or under a bell jar with air circulation.

Nutrition

During the growing period (spring to fall), you may lightly fertilize once a month with a dilute orchid fertilizer (¼ of the normal dosage).

Watering

Constantly keep the substrate slightly moist with demineralized water. Do not let it dry out, but also avoid stagnant water in the pot.

Flowering

Flowering is subtle and usually visible in autumn or winter. Small, white to pale pink flowers appear on a slender stem. The plant does not bloom profusely, but forms a nice accent to the foliage.
